Fire, has many ways of being looked at, especially in the framework of culture.
Generally in today's times, to set something on fire is sign of desecration or disrespect.
Logic may therefore hold, that the reason why someone burned a copy of the Quran or pages from it, was to incite discomfort to those that honor the Quran, make a political or religious statement, a technique used by nationalism/antinationalits, foreign Muslim persons please go back to your home and other frivolous slogans.
Therefore, most would just say, respect all religions and leave Quran or any other book that involves Revelation, such as Torah, Zabur, and so on, alone.
In this conversation, let's take a look at why might be behind the psychological pathology why generally perceived disrespect is allowed to be kept up.
There have been a few Quran burning 'events' recently, made a big to-do with adding on the ropes that made it a bounce off the local court system. For example, in recent weeks in Sweden outside a grand place of worship on the day known as Eid.
In the same vein of what is about to be discussed, Eid alAdha celebrates the willingness to sacrifice one's life, whereat it was replaced with an animal, and as the story goes the man known popularly as Ibrahim or Abraham with spelling variations, would receive a reward of longevity in that the event would be celebrated for enduring times after him. Keep in mind that this basically was many years before Muhammad, (sula.., /peace..post mention recital), that many modern critics simplify and say is the point of the start of Islam, so Eid is 'Muslim holiday', limited to about 1400 years back. Well no, as made obvious, the holiday goes back all the way to Ibrahim, Abraham. All are welcome, can do, have done, and other dimensions, to carry on the tradition.
So-- burning the Quran outside a place of worship or masjid on Eid, really has very little significance or meaning. It is as though it is to attack a religious rite, a certain people, in a certain time, but the Eid has a scope well beyond the philosophy of Mr Quran burner.
And what is burning?
Burning is found in many places in big books such as Quran, and the book to Isa, Esa, Jesus.
If burning is to exalt, how silly it is to burn a book even though the intentions may be to make a vain attempt to condescend.
In ancient times, different scorchings of food were performed to accomplish or have meaning of different objectives. Fire was used to purify, the same concept is still used today, such during water boil advisories.
Sweden has or had Valborg, in some aspects a long time ago, was to ward off evil through fire, -fyr.
Of course, the old Viking funeral, Sweden often considered as a region they were in, when arrows alight were shot at the ship, is brought up, -honoring departed battle warriors.
For now, lastly, the books, were of oral, spoken. Sheds some light on the meaning of book in context. In later years, writings from books went from being collected from different sources and materials, to the modern day book form that most identify today as, a book. It is pretty tough to burn spoken words and sounds. Why bother burning the by-product of trees, in paper?
At the end of the day, Quran burning you today during protests may just be to make others uncomfortable, It is all about intentions.
