Rash of Attacks at or Near Religious Sites
Posted by HCN on Monday, April 29, 2019
There has been a spate, a sudden surge, of attacks, at, near, in, or around religious sites, many or possibly all of which involved the use of firearms.
This past weekend was marked by violence on the East and West Coasts of the USA.
In Baltimore, western area, near the City portion of a road that turns or runs into Baltimore National Pike, also known as Route 40, reports say a gunman fired indiscriminately into a crowd at gathering for at least one cookout near where a few churches are located. One person was killed, at least seven were injured.
In the region around San Diego, California, Poway, a gunman using an 'AR' type assault rifle, inherent is the acronym, fired shots at a synagogue. One person was killed, several injured.
In some ways the above two incidents mirror each other.
In other ways, they could be seen as worlds apart. The incident at the synagogue perhaps targeted those of the Jewish or Yehudi religion. The incident in Baltimore took place in an area where the residents are predominantly described as African American, whereat however, ancestral routes in a few lines may have others besides that.
Meanwhile, in Sri Lanka, an exchange of gunfire, from the church killing within the past few weeks, to the attacker being killed, may have been another in a series of attacks that goes back beyond decades.
Baltimore, Maryland in the past few weeks has been in heightened difficulty in the area of shootings especially affecting African American neighborhoods.
In regard the synagogue shooting, there are immediate reflections on the synagogue shooting that occurred in the Squirrel Hill area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania about a half a year ago.
At this time, as readers and viewers of the news are able to assess the totality, they can see the contrast where synagogue shootings are receiving comparably more empathy than the incidents in the African American areas of Baltimore, and a few other cities, especially on a National level, such as in the amount of news stories discussing the events. This while, the violence among African Americans, in both victims and perpetrators, far exceeds what is in the synagogues.
The reason why might be almost self explanatory; the African American perpetrators of violence do not cease despite being asked, the situation is hackneyed to the extent it may be a story of boy crying wolf too much. However, one family at a time. Each family of each victim does not feel they are a number in the statistics of cry of wolf.
Situation needs to be addressed.
Very importantly, in cases like this, where religious sites are being targeted, there needs to be an awareness that the targets may be religious sites in general and not a particular religion.
Update 2:25pm EST, "The man accused of killing one person and wounding three more with an assault rifle at a synagogue near San Diego also may have set fire to a nearby mosque." Confer https://abcnews.go.com/US/start-here-synagogue-attacked-san-diego-nra-investigated-york/story?id=62652153
