Thus far there are several big events that have happened in American history within recent enough decades that they can plausibly said to be remindful of, if not similar events, that involved what appears to be abductions and morbid ending. This in regard to a recent finding of two males in a mine near Eureka, Utah.

Among the instances cited in the movie that hold sharp comparisons are the case of Freida Langer whose body was found decomposed in Vermont in 1951, and Sakamoto case in 1986. The Hawaii portion of the movie might be apt.
There was another case where a person drove off the road and reported missing in the sequence.
