Missing Georgia Teen Found. Much More Progress is Needed in the Area of Crimes Involving Teens.
Posted by HCN on Wednesday, September 18, 2013
The missing 14 year old female teen, Perez, in the area near Atlanta, that was abducted from her house after a break-in by two men about 2:15am yesterday, has been found. Outstanding job goes out to the men and women that successfully made that accomplishment, and surely the family of the victim is relieved.
In other areas, geographically, and other types of crimes, [[edit added referring to fast/partial reading interpretations 11/4/2013:] the mitigation of] crimes involving teens needs a big lift.
Areas involving teens that plague the continental U.S.:
Geographic regions that have been hit hard by violence involving teens in recent weeks includes Detroit, Michigan. The crime that involved a female teenager as the victim, referent 'behind a school', is one salient, occurred in Camden, New Jersey.

The data on Camden, in combination with recent events of crime have some aspects which are disturbing. Camden has a population that usually hovers between 70,000 to 80,000 persons as a rounded estimate. There are some NFL football stadiums that can hold more people. In what would seem a well-knit community, the type of crimes, and the number of times they happen, is difficult to comprehend as to why and how they could possibly keep occurring.
Without going into detail, in the past few years, there have been suspected serial rapists in the area, some of them apprehended, and unspeakable events having to do with men assaulting women. In that number, of over 70,000, that could fill a football stadium, where everyone gets in or out in 2 hours, data on recent crime in Camden shows that every year, about 60 rapes occur, 40 murders, 1,100 burglaries, and over 1000 assaults.

Violence kills 5 over weekend in Detroit
Detroit — At least five people in four separate incidents were killed in the city since Friday, police said.
Two people were killed by gunshot wounds overnight in two separate incidents on the city’s west side, wrapping up a deadly weekend.
Both victims were killed between 11:30 p.m. Sunday and 1 a.m. Monday.
One of the victims, a man in his 20s, was found with multiple gunshot wounds at 11:30 p.m. Sunday on the 7000 block of Vaughn, Detroit police Sgt. Michael Woody said. In a separate incident, police found a man in his 20s with a gunshot wound near Puritan and Ohio.
Sunday night’s fatal shootings came just days after a double homicide during the day on the 5900 block of Seneca in the city’s east side, which was related, sources say, to a third shooting on Saturday.
A friend of Lawrence Sanders, 29, who was killed Friday on the 5900 block of Seneca Street, said the man injured Saturday was also a friend of Sanders. The friend did not give her name out of fear of retaliation.
Police confirmed Saturday’s incident occurred at a Sunoco gas station on Van Dyke and Gratiot just before 8 p.m.
The Rev. Norman McIntyre, who performs a street ministry on that corner every Saturday, said he spoke to a handful of young men in the moments before “an angry mob” fight erupted. As he does for those who approach him at a small stand he has set up with scripture and snacks, he handed the men hot dogs.
“They told me about the young men who were killed on Seneca and I actually prayed for them,” McIntyre said.
He said the men, whom he described as being in their late teens or early 20s, began to argue with some people who pulled up in a car.
Three or four more cars arrived, with more people gathering and up, with men and women yelling and jumping onto one another.
That’s when McIntyre saw a man pull out a gun.
“He fired about three shots, hit a young man who fell to the ground. It just choked my heart up to see that,” McIntyre said.
Relatives of Sanders said he died from gunshot wounds Friday morning on the way to a hospital. The man shot Saturday was taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries, the friend said.
Residents described the area as tight-knit but troubled by gun violence.
An abandoned house, which sits on the corner of Seneca and Medbury, is covered with at least a half a dozen names preceded with R.I.P. scrawled in graffiti, a memorial to the dead.
One of Sanders’ sisters, Shani Sanders, 34, said everyone in the neighborhood knew her brother.
“He was a fun-loving, dedicated family man,” Shani Sanders said.
Lawrence Sanders grew up only a few blocks away from where he was shot. He graduated from Kettering High School. He had a daughter Lauren, 4, and a son Dominic, 1.
His killing Friday was the second shooting in less than a year that left the Sanders family grieving. On Dec. 1, Sanders’ brother Perris was gunned down on Balfour Road in the city's east side.
Two males are suspected in Friday’s shootings. One in his 20s and weighs about 160 pounds. He also has what police describe as a distinctive goatee. The second was described only as wearing an orange jacket.
Meanwhile, at about 7 p.m. Friday in the 4000 block of 32nd Street, a 55-year-old man died during an altercation with a group of males, police said. One of the men assaulted the victim with a sharp-edged object and he died from his injuries.
No one was arrested in connection with the five homicides.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detroit Police Homicide at (313) 596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at (800) SPEAK-UP.
McIntyre said the violence over the weekend will not deter him from coming back.
He plans to return to his street corner ministry Friday.

Roseville man busted for setting up tryst with 14-year-old
August 29, 2013
A 33-year-old man who thought he would be meeting a young teenage girl in a Roseville park Wednesday night found himself surrounded by police officers instead. Darren Calvin Bailey was arraigned Thursday afternoon on several felony counts, as police questioned whether there may be other victims.
An investigation started after a man contacted police about messages his 14-year-old daughter received on her computer, purporting to come from another teen.
“The father was dubious of individual’s intentions and notified the police of his fears,” police said in a release today.
Members of the local police’s Special Investigations Division and the Southeast Michigan Crimes Against Children (SMCAC) Task Force started fielding and responding to communications by the suspect, pretending to be the teen.
According to police, the suspect asked for photos and sexual favors, and sent explicit photos of himself. Finally, he set up last night’s meeting. Whatever sugarplums were dancing in his head vanished when he saw the official welcoming committee.
Bailey did not allow an uneventful arrest. He tried to run, then fought with officers, who were forced to use a Taser on him.
This afternoon, Bailey appeared in 39th district court for arraignment. He was charged with two counts of Child Sexually Abusive Behavior, one count of using a computer to commit a felony, and one count of assault on a police officer. The first two felonies are punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Bailey is jailed on a $1 million bond pending a September 11 preliminary examination.
Roseville police encourage others who may have been victimized by the suspect to contact them at (586) 447-4483.

Detroit man, 33, to stand trial in death boy, 12
Oralandar Brand-Williams
The Detroit News
Comments
Detroit—Alvin Demetrius Conwell, a 33-year-old city resident, has been ordered to stand trial by Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Michael Wagner in the shooting death of 12-year-old Kenis Green Jr. and the wounding of his mom’s boyfriend last month.
Conwell is accused of fatally wounding the boy and his mother’s boyfriend, Gregory Owens, during a drive-by shooting in the early morning of Aug. 31 outside the family’s home in the 14100 block of Rutherford on the city’s westside.
The shooting is believed to have stemmed from an argument between Conwell and Green’s uncle, Willie Hall. According to testimony, Conwell was angry at Owens over contact he’d had with the mother of Conwell’s children. Willie Hall testified Monday that Conwell told him in June that he would shoot up his house following a spat. Hall said Conwell later apologized and the two men shook hands and walked away.
During testimony in the preliminary examination in the case Monday before Wagner, witnesses testified that shots were fired from a van as children played outside in the late hours following a birthday party for Hall the night before.
Green’s mother, Sunsearae Hall, gave emotional testimony Monday how she saw a burgundy-colored van being driven slowly down the street and stop in front of her family’s home before gunfire erupted from it.
She said she warned the children to get into the house. She said once the shooting ended, which also included shots fired by her cousin, she noticed Owns had been shot in the side and then her attention was turned on her son when her friend said her child had been shot.
“I ran to the porch ...my son was shot....in the head,” said Hall during testimony. “He was lying in the doorway. I wrapped him.”
Green was pronounced dead at the hospital. His funeral was held Saturday. Owens is still hospitalized.
Sunsearae Hall testified Monday that she could not see who did the shooting but did see Conwell driving the van. During a statement to police shortly after the shooting, Sunsearae Hall identified Conwell in a photo lineup as the shooter.
But Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Molly Kettler asked Wagner to bound over Conwell for trial saying “the people have clearly established all the evidence” of the case against Conwell.
Dearborn attorney John McWilliams, Conwell’s lawyer, said he plans to file a motion to dismiss the charges against Conwell noting that Sunsearae Hall did not identify his client as the shooter during Monday’s hearing and neither did Hall or Tory Brown, the cousin who fired back at the van Aug. 31.
“There is a big question as to the identification of the person in the van,” McWilliams said.
Conwell faces an arraignment on information 9 a.m. Sept. 23 in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Detroit man charged with murder 1 in shooting death of pre-teen
Bail denied in double shooting case
Robert BrignallDetroit Crime Examiner
September 5, 2013
A 33-year-old man was arraigned Thursday on a charge of 1st degree murder after a young boy became collateral damage in a dispute between the defendant and another man. Alvin D. Conwell is accused of shooting the boy to death early Saturday, and seriously injuring the target of his wrath.
Neighbors say Conwell became incensed when Greg Owens, 25, allegedly flirted with Conwell’s girlfriend last Friday. There followed a verbal joust between the two men.
Conwell left and returned, apparently with a gun.
Meanwhile, 12-year-old Kenis Green was participating in a late-night birthday celebration at his home in the 14100 block of Rutherford Street, near Schoolcraft and Greenfield on the city’s west side. He was among his siblings and cousins.
Unfortunately, this was also the location of the Conwell-Owens dispute.
When Conwell returned at about 1:00 a.m. Saturday, he allegedly stopped his car and opened fire..Owens was shot in the abdomen. Green took a bullet to the head.
Green was dead on arrival at a local hospital. Owens survived, but remains in critical condition.
Conwell was arraigned today in 36th district court on one charge of murder 1, two charges assault with intent to murder, and felony firearm. Bond was denied pending further proceedings.

Skull and bones found in St Clair Shores creek
August 9, 2013
A Port Huron man searching for freshwater clams Thursday afternoon in Mill Creek stumbled upon a human skull. The St Clair County Sheriff’s department is investigating.
Frank Kozlowski and some companions were looking for clams in a section of Mill Creek in the Beard Hills State Game Area in Clyde Township. That location is about 55 miles northeast of Detroit.
According to a release by St Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnelon, Kozlowski reached under a log in 3-4 feet of water and felt something odd.
He pulled out a skull.
The Port Huron man placed it onto the shore. He and his friends then went to their vehicle and called the sheriff. A deputy and a detective were sent to the scene.
A dive team was also dispatched. In the area where the skull was found they discovered a few other bones.
The bones were sent to Medical Examiner Dr. Daniel Spitz for examination.
