Thomas Fire in Southern California and Legion Lake Fire in Southwestern South Dakota Serious Challenges Persisting in Middle of December 2017

Posted by HCN on Friday, December 15, 2017
Thomas Fire near Santa Barbara in southern California and Legion Lake Wildfire in Custer State Park in southwest South Dakota are the big two major wildfires, threatening to life and at high priority levels, going on right now, Thursday night 9:30pm EST

A firefighter has been killed amidst the Thomas Fire.  From Ventura County and Santa Barbara County working southward in California are several other large wildfires, but smaller in proportion to the Thomas Fire consuming about a quarter of a million acres and ranking one of the largest in the State's {state's} history.

Meanwhile in the southwestern region of South Dakota, a fire said to have started more recently, is also bursting with force.

Yes it is December, however, wildfires of the referent magnitude are stilled revved up.

Pretty obvious is that the Thomas Fire has an orange tinge, while the Legion Lake fire looks more yellowish.  Pictures of the fires make it look as though the Thomas Fire appears as if it is flowing like river of flames, while the one in Custer State Park looks more like huge balloons of fire.

Legion Lake Fire under investigation as to how started.

Words of caution:
  • When certain fires get to be large and powerful in magnitude, intensity and so forth, because of flashpoint and other phenomena, fires could spread without actually being ignited through being in contact or sparked by other actual flames
  • Winds might also be driving the spread of fires
  • Fires might be spread beyond just the name of the park they are said to be in news stories
  • All-around cautions need to be taken with fires of these magnitudes, including bison, other animals they might be interfacing with in the chaos not necessarily immediately evident to human analysis of the situation, animals generally, low temperatures kept mindful of such as due to the time of year, high temperatures such as due to proximity of fires, potential of road-hopping of fires, length of daylight, length of night or darkness, and climate aspects like air chemical ratios in connection with the time of year
