DC Drinking Water Readiness and How to Keep the Make Sure What You Consume is the Healthiest
August 26, 2016
Generally water quality in DC is good. This at least as the water comes from the source and makes its way to your faucet and sinks. Discrepancies in slight levels of water quality, if and when they do occur on rare occasion in trace amounts, are phenomena that can be prevented with a solid understanding of how water quality works after it enters your house or office.
Water quality can deteriorate after several hours. Avoiding consumption of water that has been stagnate for too long can help you intake healthy water. Sometimes water that sits behind the shutoff point of when you last turned the faucet on, can have the potentiality of unwanted water quality, so, when you turn on the water next, let it run slowly for a minute or two before commencing water related activity.
Of course having a water filter set-up especially in the kitchen can be helpful; even still, let the water run out a minute or so, as to not rely solely on the filter heavily.
The prospects of lead contamination are not that viable until the water comes into contact with objects seeping lead, like very old pipe soldering or brass pipes. If you are living in an old house and suspect some plumbing issues, and have not had the pipes replaced in some years, have an inspection of the pipes and water, and it may be recommended to move replacing old water pipes and parts further up in the priority list, or immediately get the new parts necessary.
When taking kids to older buildings where there are water fountains that have not had the pipes updated in a while, it is not recommended to have their thirst quenching plan guzzling the water, especially tap water from bathroom sinks. Temperatures and chemical reactions in microscopic amounts change every day, possibly affecting old pipes and the water that runs through them, so the water could change by amounts that highly advanced technological equipment can detect from moment to moment. Drinking water from sources in old building that has not had its water system updated recently, should be done in moderation, while having bottled water as the thirst relief plan is ideal.
